Eco Winter Crafts For Kids
Winter is the perfect time to get crafty with the kids! When the weather is cold and wet outside, then there's nothing better than getting cosy and creative inside. Ditch the plastic glitter and sellotape and opt for natural and recyclable materials such as paper tape, recycled cardboard boxes and natural fibres like organic cotton and wool. Keep your eyes peeled for natural treasures on your winter walks; leaves, cones, feathers, seed heads and wool. These are great for adding texture to your winter crafts.
Winter Crown
The tradition of wearing a crown during Christmas Dinner goes all the way back to the ancient Romans. Festive headgear was worn during the celebrations of Saturnalia, a raucous festival held around the winter solstice. Now a mainstay of Christmas crackers, a paper crown is firmly part of our Christmas celebrations. Here's our take on this tradition, a DIY winter crown with a touch of winter solstice magic.
Winter in the garden, hedgerows and parks can seem a bit bleak, but if you look a little closer there's a whole world of texture and amazing structures to explore. Dried seed heads from poppies, teasels, grasses and herbs can be prickly, soft and silky, fluffy and rattle, making a great sensory experience. Add some evergreen ivy for colour to create a crown to celebrate the season.
You will need:
- Thin cardboard (an old cereal box is ideal)
- Wide paper tape
- Dried seed heads
To make:
Collect your seedheads from the garden, park or on a winter walk. This is a great excuse to get outside and make the most of the short hours of daylight on a winter day.
Cut two strips of card long enough to go around your child's head and secure with tape.
Tape your seedheads to the crown, finishing off with one long piece of wide paper tape to secure everything down and secure the end. Completely biodegradable, when you’ve finished with your crown it can go on the compost heap!
