Rainbow Hands Children's Book by Mamta Nainy and Jo Loring-Fisher

Written by Mamta Nainy and illustrated by Jo Loring-Fisher, 'Rainbow Hands' is a colourful children's story book about a young boy who loves to paint his nails. Every time he dips his fingers into the bottles of nail varnish he can find a colour that perfectly suits his mood and feelings that day. Whether it's matching the bright blue sky or the mossy greens of the garden - there's magic in those little bottles!

Some days, his father says “What have you done to your nails?” And sometimes he says, “Why don’t you paint on paper instead?” But the little boy loves how colourful his hands look and how he can express himself. This children's book is a beautiful lesson of embracing your identity and being confident in who you are.

Quietly breaks down gender stereotypes

This book is centred around a young boy painting his nails each day using his mum's nail varnish to match his mood. I think it is wonderful how this book demonstrates men wearing nail varnish/make up AND expressing their emotions. It casually breaks down so many gender stereotypes without ever drawing any attention to there being a stereotype there in the first place! I have 2 1/2 year old B/G twins and it is so important to me that they grow up with equal opportunities and being true to themselves, and not just feeling they have to live the gender stereotypes society has laid out to them. In addition to the wonderful messages in this book the artwork is stunning, and the hardback cover and paper feel really high quality and make the book lovely to hold or stand up in a display - it would make a really lovely gift.

Beautiful book breaking down gender stereotypes

I LOVE this book. It is a lovely thoughtful book which looks at how colours, specifically of a little persons nail varnish, represents and helps them understand their emotions. It also helps to break down the idea that nail varnish (amongst other things) is gender specific. Beautifully told and the illustrations are gorgeous. My 4 year old LOVES it and my 2 year old has been pointing out things from the pictures. A happy engaged family.

Right in so many ways!

I love the fact that the main character resembles my little boy. I love the fact that it references his Dadaji as my son has a Daduji. And then there’s the beautiful illustrations, the conversations about gender stereotypes and expressing emotions. What more could you want?

Where was this book when we were kids?

This book is what my generation were missing! I knew (and now know) so many little boys who loved (and do love) colour and were (are) obsessed with painted nails. I also know many adults who had a problem with it, which is so delicately and briefly mentioned in this book and the feelings of the child focused on. I was so pleased the focus was on the child and their feelings throughout. Not only does this book challenge social norms, and adult responses to a child expressing themselves, but it's a fantastic book for discussing feelings and how colours can represent them. It would be perfect inspiration for so many invitations to play or story sacks. It is such a beautiful dreamy book with gorgeous illustrations. I just loved it and so did all my little ones. My daughter got so excited the second she opened the book and saw nail polish bottles! It is perfect for all ages and I'm so happy to have another book full of acceptance, emotions and mindfulness on the bookshelf.

Dreamy!

Connor age 6: 'lots of colours + finger nails + feelings = a great book'.

Both my 6 and 4 year old loved this, it's not so long that my youngest gets bored but still wordy enough that my independent reader was happy.

This is another great book breaking down stereotype while teaching important lessons. It focuses on feelings and how our main character paints their nails in colours to reflect their mood. 'Papa' disproves and tries to redirect but 'Dadaji' ensures that this rainbow child stays true to themselves and can express that how they like.

The illustrations here are so soft and dreamy, just another beautiful book!
