A great introduction to middle grade mystery/fantasy

This story is full of mystery, suspense, friendship, self acceptance and a twisty betrayal. As an adult I saw it coming but my 9 year old was shook! It's also a great introduction to Kenyan culture for people that are unfamiliar with it and really expresses the importance of embracing your true self. It's set in the modern day and the characters' speech and wording really represents this well and makes it very relatable, although I will always hate when my kids call people 'Bro'

There were some very important conversations interwoven through this book too. Things like not watering yourself down to make other comfortable, dealing with pressure from ambitious parents and the power in embracing your name. I thought these were brilliantly empowering for anyone to read.

Overall, a great addition to our book shelf and one Caitlyn really enjoyed reading. It's a nice slope to the world of slightly older paranormal/fantasy books for her. Caitlyn is 9 and she said she would recommend to people aged 9-12 and I'd probably agree.
