Colour and Me by Michaela Dias-Hayes

Written and illustrated by Michaela Dias-Hayes (illustrator of Sunflower Sisters,) 'Colour and Me' is a 32 page children's book that explores identity and race through colourful pictures and a heart warming story.

Inspired by Michaela's own son, this book is a joyful take on colour mixing that empowers children and shows them the true beauty of having brown skin. Michaela says, “I wrote this book after mixing paints with my son - when he mixed all the paints together, he looked at me and said “Yuk brown ... I hate brown!” This made me question why. I then explained, “It’s not yuk - it’s beautiful like you and me.”

Colour and Me is a beautifully simplistic way to explore colour and features equally bright and exciting illustrations. "I made orange, green and purple, using yellow, red and blue – and brown from all three colours... What a magical thing to do!"

Such a joy to read!

A really lovely book, the writing is just perfect. 6yo loved the colour mixing and immediately got out the okonorm paints to do some mixing of her own! When we read it again later she then started to talk about the references to skin colour, and it opened up some really positive discussion. We’ve already started a handprint rainbow! Can’t recommend this book enough.

Beautiful book

What a beautiful, empowering story that is educational too!
My little one is just starting to learn colours and this book will be a great way of teaching him, it explains colour mixing in a simple straightforward way.
The illustrations are lovley and the bright colours used are eye catching and easy to look at. The front cover is slightly textured which gives it an extra special quality.
I did find the rhymes and flow slightly off on one or two pages, but overall it read well and certainly didn't put me off reading it. It's a good length for toddlers as well, with not too many words in each page.
It describes itself as 'a joyful book' and it truly is. I know it's going to be one we read again and again, as it's an uplifting story that left me with a smile.

This is such a lovely story, perfect for a bit of bookish play.. which we love! The story talks about colour mixing, but also talks about race and relationships. It’s delivered is a very lovely way through the book. The illustrations are lovely and Matthew loved to read it to Molly this week

Beautiful book

I really enjoyed reading Colour and Me with my daughter. The illustrations really draw you in and are so vibrant. My 7 year old said she really enjoyed reading about the colour mixing and loved that the pictures were halfway between real and cartoons and I know what she means. We loved the attention to detail and all the different hair styles. A beautiful book for all children

Colourful and wonderful

Colour and me is a great read for toddlers and younger children. Through colourful illustrations and a gentle rhyme children are introduced to basic colour theory, diversity and acceptance. My three (almost 4) year old was engaged throughout, learning as we read and using the images to help him predict the colour mixes. My 6 year older wasn’t as engaged - he knows his primary and secondary colours so didn’t care as much for the rhythm and flow of the story as he “knew the answers”- but he did enjoy trying to name things in the different colours.

I really like that this book is paper back, printed on quality paper so that its tactile and easily handled by small hands without fear of rips as can sometimes happen. Another excellent publication from Owlet Press
