Dilwyn The Welsh Dragon in Partnership with The Royal Mint

In the valleys of Wales, everyone at The Royal Mint is hard at work, making coins. But one night, a baby red dragon hatches from a magical egg! The makers name him Dilwyn and take care of him until he’s big enough to guard their coins. Every night Dilwyn sleeps high up in the rafters keeping watch; until two robbers foolishly try to break in . . .

Dilwyn The Welsh Dragon cleverly combines the mythical red Welsh dragon with factual information about the Royal Mint in this fun and engaging story. The cheerful, easy to read rhyming text brings this story to life for little readers, accompanied by the endearing and lively illustrations by Jessica Rose. Aimed at children aged between 2and 5 years old, this book uses simple language to stimulate reading and comprehension skills.

An absolutely amazing book!

Dilwyn is a very special book to us, we live not ten minutes from the Royal Mint where Dilwyn lives and looks after the money! We have been coming here for years, and Matthew loves collecting coins. Today we took our special book to the royal Mint to look for Dilwyn, but sadly, one of the lovely workers said he was sleeping, ready to guard the money tonight, when they all go home.

Dilwyn was hatched from a dragon egg in a pile of gold coins in the royal mint. Dilwyn means truth, and he was a wonderful gift.

We love this story and we have read it at least once or twice a week for years! It’s always been a firm favourite. It stood out originally for me as it’s a welsh based book, we don’t have many of those! But I never thought when I ordered it from Babipur years ago it would still be as loved today as it was then! That’s all down to Sam & Jessica’s amazing writing and illustrations!

A lovely, easy to read, rhyming book about a cute dragon!

A lovely, easy to read, rhyming book about a cute dragon who ends up guarding all the coins at The Royal Mint in Wales. My boys really enjoyed this book - seeing how coins were made, the rainbow egg and what Dilwyn did when there were intruders at The Royal Mint! I like how on the last page of the book there's a web address to take you to look at the real Royal Mint too. We'd recommend this book!

Fabulous read

We all really enjoyed this story. It's a lovely feel good tale about a dragon born in the Royal Mint and ends up having to protect it from robbers trying to steal the gold. This story is right up my boys street, anything involving robbers and bad guys always gets a big thumbs up. What is particularly nice is that it drops in lots of little snippets of actual information about what happens in the Royal mint, how the coins are made etc which obviously they didn't know and my 9 year old commented was very interesting. Illustrations are lovely and inviting. Fab read that I'd definitely recommend and has already been read quite a few times here.

Lovely rhyming story

We always enjoy a rhyming story, and Dilwyn has a nice easy flow - a great little bedtime read for little ones! A nice little introduction to the Royal Mint and how coins are made, it’s been added to our list of places to visit when we’re in the area. A fun, easy to understand story for preschoolers and early years.

An enjoyable read with my 4 & 6yo

My children and i enjoyed this book very much. The rhyming sentences are fun to read and easy to understand. The drawings offer plenty for my 4yo to look at while he is being read to and as each page is not too wordy, my 6yo feels more confident in reading the book to himself.

We didn't know that the royal mint was in Wales so that was something interesting to learn about! The combo of factual and mythical made the story more interesting for us.
