Made up of identical pine planks, KAPLA wooden blocks are designed for builders from 3 years to 103+. An open-ended construction game to ignite creativity and a passion for engineering and logical thinking. Developed by Dutchman Tom van der Bruggen in 1987, drawing inspiration from his studies in History of Art and love of architectural design, KAPLA planks bring together both art and STEM subjects. The name comes from the Dutch word ‘Kabouter Plankjes’, meaning ‘Gnome Planks’ and abbreviated to KAPLA.

These innovative building planks are unique in size, in the ratio of 1:3:5. This makes them ideal for creating increasingly complex structures, due to their stability, held together by gravity alone. This ratio is used when designing building features including lintels, roofs and floors, making KAPLA creations surprisingly difficult to knock down! Made from smooth, 100% untreated pine wood from natural pine forests in Les Landes in the South-West of France, a renewable and sustainable material. KAPLA blocks are made to the highest precision manufacturing in their own factory in Morocco. Simple, timeless and engaging, get ready to build with KAPLA at Babipur.

Bought as a joint present for a 5yr old and 1yr old and over the passed year they have been used for a huge range of activities… armies, building, counting, spaceships, canons, food. Our bow 6yr old is asking for more kapla for Christmas so his towers and bridges can be bigger and taller. Really great addition.

Kapla challenges

I bought these for my son, then five, a couple of years ago. He loves building, it is his default activity: knex, magnet blocks, lego, those irritating plastic straws that you join together at the ends. He uses them all.

Kapla is the most challenging of these materials. Whilst at 5 he would make simple towers and platforms, he now, at just turned seven and inspired by an endless stream of creations on Pinterest, makes incredible things. I am rather less capable, and can't seem to do the counterbalancing that is natural to him. There is a learning curve, but it's good to see the challenge of mastering the toy play out. It feels like the sort of thing that will be handed down generations in a progressively tatty box and I love it for that.

I am tempted by the colourful set this year, but this set is plenty to get going.

Great starter set

We bought this set for our 6yr old last Christmas; we had dithered between sizes, but opted for this one as it seemed enough for a range of builds. We also got him one of the books to go with it, which was good for initial inspiration. We find Kapla is a toy he returns to over and over again, sometimes for small, quick creations, other times for larger ideas. It's versatile and accessible to various abilities; our 4yr old makes road and "garages" out of it, our 6yr old will build models from his imagination but also attempt some of the book builds, and us adults like to try out the larger ones! We've since added other sets to our collection, and the kids have asked for some coloured ones this year.

Perfect for any kid who loves to build

My son seems to be a budding architect he build things all day long. He can spend ages playing minecraft but all he does is build houses. Kapla is absolutely the most perfect gift he has ever received. He will spend hours building skyscrapers and cities. This set was the perfect starter set to buy as you have enough blocks to really explore the versatility of kapla.

Just the right amount of blocks

This box is perfect for a first box of kapla. It's got enough blocks for both my boys to play together and also to make impressive sculptures. But now I want the coloured ones!
