Georganics Natural Toothpaste – Spearmint

Taste is good, consistency takes some getting used to. I like it, my partner not so much.

As part of our journey to reduce plastic waste my husband and I decided to give this a bash. It comes in a lovely glass pot with a bamboo spatula for spreading on your toothbrush. The pot is great size for reusing as a small snack pot, for decanting toiletries in for travelling or to store small crafty bits.

The actual toothpaste is very different to the stuff you get in a tube and did take a few goes to get used to it. It has a clay like texture which may not he for everyone (worth looking at the tooth powder if this isn't for you). Application is easy and it does taste minty but not in an immediate wow my mouth feels fresh way. I do however now prefer it to the bog standard stuff and both of us are very happy to not have to go back to plastic tubes, palm oil and sweeteners in our toothpaste.

The pot also seems to last for ages, so although it's more expensive than a tube of toothpaste it's still pretty good value for money

I've been searching for plastic free products that minimise waste for a long while, and this seemed to fit the bill. I love the glass & tin packaging. The toothpaste has a clay-ey texture because of the kaolin which makes it sometimes a bit difficult to smear onto my toothbrush using the little spatula; I'm actually finding it easier to dip my finger in and smear it over my teeth, then brush.

The taste was a bit of a shock on first use; it's not at all sweet, doesn't foam, and tastes a bit 'essential oil-y' - but the taste doesn't seem to linger in your mouth after rinsing, so there isn't a strong minty aftertaste; and the slightly gritty texture is very different from Colgate, obviously. I found the first 3 days a bit of a slog, and my gums were slightly irritated. I thought, I've bought it, I'd better use the whole pot! However, I don't quite know how, but after a few days I found I had completely gotten used to the taste - acclimatising, as it were. And now that I've been using it a few weeks, I'm really delighted by how clean my teeth feel for ages after brushing. This isn't the false feeling of transient mintyness, but the actual surface of my teeth feels smoother, and also my gums are now less irritated than when I used Colgate.

I am strongly committed to moving towards a zero-waste lifestyle, and I can take a less tasty toothpaste, because that is not my priority. I have to say my husband has flatly refused after one brushing experience. If you are prepared to 'dig in', as it were, I think this is a very worthwhile product, and there are many benefits to using it.
