We're Off To Meet a Mermaid by Eloise White

We’re Off to Meet a Mermaid is about a family in search for the splishy splashy mermaid. As their quest takes them deeper and deeper into the ocean, they discover many endangered underwater creatures along the way, that all have a magic of their own.

This playful story will be a favourite with children and grown-ups, with a simple storyline and repetitive patterns which encourage little ones to have fun joining in with the narrative. This book naturally and seamlessly incorporates diversity within the family, including people of different ethnicities and abilities. Beautifully illustrated by Cory Reid, can you find the elusive mermaid hidden within the pages?

The “We’re Off to” collection of adventure stories aim to help grow awareness of endangered wildlife, while also spreading the message of the importance of diversity in more playful and imaginative stories.

Love this book for little kids!

This is such a brilliantly simple book! My 2yr old and 4yr old both love it, they love to point out the mermaid on each page and the illustrations keep them engaged. Just a really lovely, easy read.

Beautiful illustrations and easy for little ones to join in

My little boy loves mermaids and really enjoyed this story. The similar layout to bear hunt meant that he could join in really easily and was really interested by all of the difference sea creatures along the way. The illustrations are beautiful. He was soo excited that he found the mermaid when the main characters didn’t!
I loved the diversity of this book, and the subtly of it. It isn’t a book about diversity, it’s just a given that the the characters aren’t all the same ❤️ It has characters with a range of ethnicities and the little girl is using a wheelchair. It’s a great book!

What a fun book!

We already have the unicorn version of this book, and new we were going to love this one too!

The fun rhythm throughout the book, beautiful bright and inviting illustrations and the hide and seek mermaid on the pages is just wonderful!

We also loved that some of the sea animals were unusual ones, like a Manatee and dragon fish!

This book has fun repetitive verses which is great for little readers.

Matthew also loved trying to make a Mermaid tail out of the @grimmswoodentoys rainbows

The perfect book for a child's imagination

I loved everything about this book: from the stunning hide and seek illustration, the introduction to different animal species, the repetition that makes it easy for little ones to retell the story, but most of all the way it aids and validates imagination.

I remember searching for all the magical creatures as a child, and though the adventures were fun, I was often disappointed I didn't find what I was looking for. I guess this is what leads to the lack of belief in all things magical after a while. What I love most about this story is that they don't find the mermaid, but the mermaid is illustrated hiding just out of sight. On the first read through my children totally missed it but then had a wonderful game of hide and seek, searching for the mermaid throughout the pages. What a wonderful message it is, that the magic is out there hiding and searching for it is so much fun. Also, just like in this story, you may find other wonderful creatures along the way.

Preschool crowd pleaser

We are always on the look out for fresh new books to share with our preschool children and this one did not disappoint! The rhythm and narrative engaged the children from the start and the premise of the story allowed them to fully immerse themselves by predicting what was going to happen next. The beautifully illustrated book gave the children lots of opportunity to describe what they could see. This book has all the elements of preschool crowd pleaser.
