What Wesley Wore by Samuel Langley-Swain

All the weasels in Westburrow Wood are supposed to follow the rules and fit in. So, imagine their confusion when they meet Wesley, a wacky weasel, who is obsessed with clothes!

This is a heart-warming story of acceptance and inclusivity, as Wesley escapes the other weasels who plot and protest against his flamboyant nature, leaving the wood much less colourful. Written by Samuel Langley-Swain, LGBT dad of two and inspired by his youth growing up in a small Welsh village and being teased and ostracised due to his fashion and outwardly flamboyant nature. Children will love this rhyming read aloud story and Wesley’s sense of fun and colour, a great book exploring self-expression and acceptance, and encouraging young readers to embrace difference and develop empathy.

    Written by Samuel Langley-Swain.

    Illustrated by Ryan Sonderegger.

Beautiful story

“It’s ok to be different” so simply told as a story about a weasel, with messages of kindness and forgiveness all intertwined. There’s been several repeat reads in our household.

Stunning

This is an absolutely beautiful book. Such a pleasure to read, with a really lovely rhyming flow.

This had all the feels (yes I cried) !

A book all about how it's okay to be unique and to be proud of who we are, it teaches us that it's not us that need to change but the views of society.

We really loved the discussions this opened up with our 7 year old, discussions about people's differences, how we are all unique and how this should be celebrated. We also touched on the importance of being an advocate.

Overall a fantastic book and definitely one to add to the bookshelf. This will definitely be read over and over.

Outstanding

What a wonderful book about acceptance. It covered every emotion from the bullies to Wesley. It teaches you that you should always be yourself and do what ever makes you happy. That you should never judge. It showed my daughter that it’s ok to stand out. My daughter loved the illustrations and the wonderful clothes Wesley wears, we’re also big fans of rhyming books. Fantastic book really recommend.

Book about bullying and acceptance

This book shows children how to stand up to bullies and to have the confidence to be true to themselves. Wesley is bullied for being different and not conforming to the rules but in the end the Wesley opens the bullies eyes and they not only accept him but join him in dressing up too!

A wonderful story about being acceptance

A heart-warming story with a focus on acceptance and a message that it's ok to be different. Wesley's wacky style very much reminds me of the wonderfully colourful, weird and wonderful clothing available at babipur, the ones that make laundry days so much more fun! I enjoyed reading this with my 6 year old and we had a little discussion afterwards about how it's ok to be different
