Kraul mirror ball showing the glass ball with reflective coating for creating optical illusions

Kraul Mirror Ball

Kraul Mirror Ball - Kids STEM Science

The Kraul Mirror Ball is a delicate blown glass sphere with a mirrored surface that reflects the world around it in miniature. It looks a little like a Christmas bauble and has a small shaped tip that children can gently hold between their fingers as they explore the reflections. While it may look decorative at first glance, this is a powerful learning tool that invites hands-on science exploration.

Children can see themselves and their surroundings in new and surprising ways. The curved surface of the ball flips images upside down, stretches shapes, and wraps the whole room into one tiny reflective view. It encourages open-ended experimentation as children move around the ball, arrange objects near it, and discover how reflections shift and change.

The Kraul Mirror Ball comes with a small activity booklet that includes simple science experiments and play ideas. Try it in a dark room with a torch, next to a flat mirror, or in different lighting conditions. Explore what happens to your face when you get close to the ball. Children might see a tiny version of themselves standing in the sky or a funny bent reflection of their head. These playful distortions spark curiosity and support early STEM learning through observation, questioning, and discovery.

This toy supports sensory play by engaging the sense of sight and encouraging calm, focused observation. It also supports the positioning schema, as children naturally arrange objects around the ball and experiment with placement and perspective. These types of play help build visual thinking, spatial awareness, and problem-solving skills.

Ideal for home learning, classroom science, or quiet creative play, the Kraul Mirror Ball is best suited for children aged 8 and over. It is very fragile and should be handled with care. Adult supervision is recommended for younger children.

Made in Germany by Kraul, this mirror ball is part of a range of thoughtful science toys that bring natural forces to life through real-world exploration and play.

STEM Play for Every Child

Kraul is a family owned business dedicated to encouraging children to learn about science and nature through experiment and play. Many of Kraul’s science and STEM kits have been inspired by Walter Kraul’s experience as a Waldorf teacher at the Rudolf Steiner School in Munich, and later developed by his son Christoph, a meteorologist and physicist. Kraul toys carry the Spiel Gut® mark and work with two workshops that involve people with disabilities in the manufacturing of these toys.
