Hydrophil Konjac Sponge

This soft, natural sponge helps to take care of sensitive skin while it cleanses. Ethically made from the konjac plant, this 100% plant-based sponge is perfect if you want a natural sponge that doesn't come from the sea. It is suitable for washing your face, babies and small children alike and helps to moisturise and can fight acne, thanks to its alkaline pH level. To use, simply wet it and sponge the skin by moving it around in circles. Team up with natural soap or body wash from Babipur for an eco wash and skincare routine.

Eastern societies have used the konjac plant for cleansing for milennia: it has been used for facial cleansing in Japan for oer 1,500 years and it is popular in Korea for gently cleaning soft baby skin. The production of the konjac sponge is an interesting one: the konjac root is ground down to make flour which is mixed with water and baked until it becomes a soft sponge that is ideal for cleansing.

Launching their first water-neutral, fairtrade, vegan and sustainable hygiene products in 2013, Hydrophil is obsessed with reducing water-pollution and plastic consumption. What is water-neutral? It means using natural ingredients that are grown without artificial irrigation, such as bamboo, as well as being careful to use colours that don’t contain mineral oils or any additives which would leave residues in the drinking or ground water when composted. Hydrophil spent a year developing their bamboo toothbrush – the handles are 100% bamboo, which is a bio-degradable, plastic-free, sustainable and fast-growing resource, and the bristles are BPA-free, made from Nylon. We even made sure we tested out these toothbrushes first-hand, ensuring it fulfilled our strict criteria for a truly sustainable product that also cleaned our back teeth properly!

Miraculous?

I'm not saying this will definitely knock 20 years off you, but after going without a konjac sponge for a few months I got this one, used it twice, and got IDed for the first time in many years. Coincidence? You decide...

Great self care Item

Take time to take care of yourself. Wow. I have used this for a few days now and my face is soooo soft. Better than any face cream I've used. I have dry skin (read never had a pimple usually use night cream 3* a day) and this is as good as a cream! So soothing too!

THOR APPROVED (I imagine)

I’ve been feeling a bit down the last few weeks, so about a week ago I put in an order for some ‘self care’ bits. My cup was running low, so I thought a bit of home-based pampering was in order.

Fast forward to today. Miraculously, I wake up this morning and decide that after 7 years, three kids, a (accidental) £75 workout app subscription and 6 weeks of lockdown, today would be the day I would finally start working out. I finished my breakfast and coffee, got dressed in some old and ill-fitting workout clothes and headed to the garden.

I loaded up my very expensive workout app and set to work. Now this particular workout app is run and owned by a certain Chris Hemsworth. What better to motivate me than a very attractive Australian superhero? I basically had a migraine by the end of the first beginners workout, but tenacity and a few inappropriate thoughts about Thor pushed me through and I felt pretty good when I finished. I was now basking in the glow of endorphins and the God of Thunder. Well, at least until I came inside to have a shower and found the DREADED RED CARD in my door. I was gutted. It’s the Friday before a bank holiday, so no hope of getting it until Tuesday now. My pampering would have to wait.

I thought I’d have a peak just in case, and lo and behold, the postman was still parked outside my house! So (following all social distancing protocols and taking care not to scare the bejesus out of him, promise!) managed to get my package.

I figure now is as good a time as any and decide to use my pamper package straight away.

People, let me tell you, this sponge is a miracle. Makeup really dries my skin out (sadly, I have a lot of work video calls during the week so I haven’t been able to enjoy a makeup-free lockdown) but I used this sponge and MY SKIN FEELS SOFTER THAN A NEWBORN BABY’S KEESTER. Never mind the glow of endorphins, my 30-year-old skin now glows with the brightness of 1,000 bolts of Mjolnir-induced lightning.

Tiva and Hemsworth (I imagine) approved.

Just the right size

Just a good size once hydrated to fit in the palm of your hand. Ideal for bathing our toddler. Great to be finally using a non plastic sponge

Small and soft

This sponge comes as a hard block and expands a little when wet but is still smaller than the palm of my hand. It is very soft so not for scrubbing. It was a bit too small and gentle for me but it's ok for my face. I can see why they are traditionally used for washing babies. The little string is handy to hang up between uses to dry out.

3 German friends – Christoph, Sebastian and Wanja, met during their time volunteering for the non-profit organisation Viva con Agua de Sankt Pauli. Their obsession with water scarcity and water pollution led to starting a blog on the subject, then in 2013 they turned their thoughts to the possibility of producing water-neutral items – which would also be vegan and fairtrade. And Hyrdophil was founded in 2013. “Hydrophil” comes from “hydrophilic”, which literally means “water loving”.
