Old Man of the Sea Children's Book by Stella Elia

The joy of storytelling transcends generations in this magical depiction of a grandfather sharing his life stories with his captivated grandson. Grandpa shares his tales of travelling across continents, each time gathering more stories to fill his luggage, as he returns to the ocean when it calls to him. Each time his grandpa visits a new continent, he falls in love all over again as he explores the new wonders of each land. Until the day he reaches America, his final and true love, the only place that could keep him from returning to the sea.

Award winning children's book, Old Man of the Sea, is a tale of adventure, respect and wisdom. Poetically written by Stella Elia, who takes you on a journey around the globe in search of peace and happiness. The gentle watercolour illustrations and maps of Weberson Santiago, are captivating to young readers who are spirited and adventurous. Every page is as enchanting as the one before, and just as his grandson, whether the stories are true or not, you will love them just the same.

Beautiful story!

What a truly special book! We have absolutely loved this book. We as a family travel quite a bit and just love the Grandfather sharing his story’s with his grandchild.

The illustrations are just beautiful, each page captivates you and just draws you into the story.

Love the reference to wrinkles and them being stories we have been on in our lives.

Matthew loved how he traveled all the world and when he found his Love he stayed, and grew a family and life with her.
He loves chatting to his grandparents about when they were younger and what they did. He finds it truly fascinating and inspires him for his life and what he wants to do.

Molly loved looking at all the maps and spotting different animals and buildings and talking about them all.

Each page is a conversation starter and we love that in books!

The quote at the end is just beautiful!

Our new favorite book!!

I can’t quite express how much I love this book. I travel a lot, so reading a story about a grandfather sharing all his tales from his worldly adventures felt rather special.

Every single page completely captivated me and my twins - the wording is just beautiful, and the illustrations are breathtakingly gorgeous. I think our favourite spread is the one where Grandpa talks about his travels in Europe - seeing so many amazing landmarks we know and love represented in the illustration is lovely. I actually used this page to show my twins the places I have visited recently!

Although we really loved the Europe spread, every page of the book takes you on a new adventure and gives you just a snapshot of what another part of the world is like. I totally recommend this book for any child, but it’s particularly brilliant for getting to grips with geography and culture!

What a fantastic book.

We absolutely loved this book!

This gave me the biggest throwback to childhood reading it. It reminded me of all the times I spent with my own grandad and he would tell me all the tales of his life.

My children loved hearing about all of the grandfather's adventures and prompted them to ask about the different places. My 5 year old was especially interested and engaged.

The illustrations are gorgeous and compliment the story really well.

Beautiful book to discuss ageing

This is such a gorgeous book, the story itself and the illustrations are so engaging. I've spent ages with my 4 year old looking at pictures, answering questions and flicking forwards and backwards. The story is a very touching look at ageing and mortality (I didn't even notice this until the end, it is not in your face) where a little person describes the tales his Grandpa has told him, his adventures and travels, all over the world. It has so many lovely levels to it. I can see it becoming a favourite.
