Oscar Seeks a Friend Children's Book by Paweł Pawlak

Oscar the skeleton wants a friend more than anything else in the world, then one day he meets a little girl who becomes an unlikely companion. When Oscar loses a tooth he thinks that it will make him even less appealing to possible new friends, but as it turns out, it was the best thing that could have happened.

A story of friendship and kindness, Oscar Seeks a Friend is written and illustrated by Pawel Pawlak who uses the medium of collage to give the impression of texture on every page. Many pages are left without words so the story can be told by the whimsical illustration, perfect for early readers. A heartwarming tale of finding companionship in the most unexpected places.

What a lovely story

What a lovely book about friendship, self love, first impressions and loosing teeth!

From the cover we thought it was going to be quite a sad book, but it turned out to be quite the opposite.
The illustrations are wonderful, a mix of black and white, which then turn into beautiful rainbows and colours!

The story is about Oscar the skeleton, who looses a tooth, and thinks he now looks ugly and nobody will make friends with him.

One day when he was out walking he stumbles upon a girl who is burying her tooth in the ground.

He stopped dead - must say.. it cracked me and Matthew up this line

Just lovely

A fabulous story about friendship, self love and seeing what's right in front of you. Oscar is the cutest little skeleton, even with his missing tooth.

The illustration style here is so unique and really interesting, the mix between the dark and bright pages was great too. I also love how some pages were wordless, it really made the art stand out and speak for itself. The story isn't massively long but it has a lovely message and we really enjoyed it.

My 9 year old said 'Oscar wasn't really being kind to him self so I didn't like that but I liked how they both found the answer to the dream they had'

Really felt a personal connection with this one

Now this is my kind of book! I really felt a personal connection to this one. It felt so me. Before kids, I was very much the stereotypical band shirt, skinny jeans, leather jacket, converse/vans, headphones, Tim Burton illustrations, black, everything black, rock and roll kind of girl. Since kids and babipur, I've become a lover of colour, all things rainbow and all the beautiful things in life. But the old me is still very much there, blasting out the heavy music whilst decorating, and often feels lost in motherhood. The two contrasts are very push and pull and I often struggle to feel "Me". Infact me and Lauren Morgan have had a few conversations about this. This book kind of confirmed for me how both sides have so much individual beauty to be loved and explored and both work together perfectly as opposites. I just love how this book shows this so much. All the illustrations were basically my adult life in a picture book

Unexpectedly touching story

Oscar is a lonely skeleton who feels unloveable - and after he loses a tooth, he is concerned he will never find a friend. But then he sees a little girl burying a tooth, hoping her wish will come true and Oscar's story takes an unexpected turn!

This book's touching storyline is coupled with beautiful, unique illustrations. My 6-year-old loved looking through them and exploring the little details on every page. The story itself is simple, yet it lends itself to deeper conversations with children - about friendship, self-talk, first impressions, our unique inner worlds, and...losing teeth (which is certainly a hot topic in our house at the moment)!

Overall, a great addition to our little library and we highly recommend this book!

A beautiful story

Our son and I read this last night and we're in love! The illustrations are beautiful and the use of mixed media adds another dimension to the images. The story itself is beautifully written and the illustration only pages helped us to connect to the story as we spotted the things they were up to. I think it will be a favourite going forward!
