You're Snug With Me Children's Book by Chitra Soundar

At the start of winter, two bear cubs are born, deep in their den in the frozen North. “Mama, what lies beyond here?” they ask. “‘Above us is a land of ice and snow.” “What lies beyond the ice and snow?” they ask. “The ocean, full of ice from long ago.” And as they learn the secrets of the Earth and their place in it, Mama Bear whispers, “You’re snug with me.”

This beautiful picture book by Chitra Soundar and illustrated by Poonam Mistry is a wonderful book set in the Arctic about a Polar bear mother and her cubs. This heart-warming tale of parental love has a gentle message of the importance of caring for the environment. The illustrations are truly stunning – young children will me mesmerised by the geometric patterns against the dark polar winter background, with twinkling stars and stylised folklore animals.

Chitra Soundar is an Indian-born British author and storyteller, who has published more than 30 books inspired by the rich heritage of folktales from India and India's natural beauty.

Such a beautiful book!

I bought this after my son was getting worried about losing me and growing up and everything that comes with it. The illustrations are beautiful and the story is just lovely, I can't wait to snuggle up and read it with him.

Simply Stunning book with wonderful messages!

Firstly this book is so stunning in appearance! The added sparkle to the cover certainly got the attention of E who's three. The illustrations have a magical combination of beautiful detailed line pictures with superb movement, colour and flow throughout. They carry you through the story so well supporting the story perfectly as well as telling their own pictorial tale. As I read each page, E kept running her fingers along the shapes and flowing lines in a really calming and engaged way.

The title and message "you're snug with me" is maintained throughout and the Polar bear and her cubs are the perfect example for the really young reader to understand the tale of the cubs growing up and of being snug and safe with mother bear until old enough, skilled enough and ready to tread the snowy landscape alone. Even at three E understood this as a basic message. Her 8yo brother also really enjoyed the story and was inspired to ask lots of questions about the beautiful polar bears, other landscapes of the world and nature. Some of the more detailed messages in this book were identified and raised by him by the end of the story.

This book is so much more than the journey of these beautiful bear cubs; it introduces the young reader to our wonderful natural world. The differing landscapes of the world, the animals of the world and what we need to do protect and preserve our beautiful planet. "We should only ever take what we need" said by Mama Bear to her cubs was a wonderful moment to pause and speak about the importance of this with the children. There is a really wonderful note from the Author talking directly to the young reader at the end of the book. I won't spoil it for you; it is a heartfelt and beautiful message.

This would make a beautiful & special gift.
